Steps

  1. 1Stand the bottle on a tray. Put the funnel in the neck and pour in the first color until it's about half an inch deep.
  2. 2Add the next color the same way. Tilt the bottle as you pour for waves, or slide a skewer down the inside of the glass for points.
  3. 3Keep layering until the sand reaches the very top, tapping the bottle gently now and then to settle it.
  4. 4Pack the last layer firmly and push the cork in tight, so the stripes can't shift.
  • Fine and dry

Fine, dry sand pours smoothly and makes neat layers. Coarser sand is better for gluing onto paper.

  • Colors that last

Look for colorfast sand that won't stain hands or fade on a sunny windowsill.

  • Plastic for little ones

Glass looks best on a shelf. Plastic bottles are safer for small children to fill.
