Make a message in a bottle

Steps

  1. 1Write your message on thin paper in waterproof ink. Sign it and add the date.
  2. 2Roll it tightly around a pencil, slide the pencil out and tie the roll with twine.
  3. 3Make sure the bottle is clean and completely dry inside, then drop the note in through the neck.
  4. 4Push the cork in snugly and tie a loop of twine around the neck. Add a dab of sealing wax over the cork if it's meant to stay closed for years.
  • A wide enough neck

The rolled note has to fit through. A neck about an inch wide is easiest, or roll the paper tighter.

  • A cork that fits

A tapered cork pushes in snugly and pulls out again when it's time to read.

  • Paper that rolls

Thin paper rolls tight and opens flat again. Thick card cracks and won't fit.
