How to · With coolant

Check your coolant

5 minutesOnce a month, engine coldEasy

Steps

  1. 1Check only with the engine off and cold, ideally before you drive in the morning. Never open the cap on a hot engine.
  2. 2Open the hood and find the coolant tank, the see-through plastic tank with MIN and MAX lines. Your manual shows where.
  3. 3If the level is below MIN, put on gloves, open the cap slowly and add the coolant your manual names, up to the MAX line.
  4. 4Close the cap firmly and wipe up every drop. If the level keeps dropping, have a mechanic check for a leak.
  • Match your manual

Cars need specific coolant types, and the wrong one can cause damage. Your owner's manual names the right one.

  • Color isn't a guide

Coolant comes in green, orange, pink, blue and more. Go by the type on the label, and don't mix types.

  • Premixed or concentrate

Premixed 50/50 is ready to use. Concentrate must be mixed with distilled water first.
