1. Wet soil first

    Water, then feed

Food poured onto dry soil can burn the roots.

  2. Winter rest

Pause from late fall to late winter

Most houseplants barely grow then and don't need feeding.

  3. Too much?

A white crust on the soil

Flush the pot with plain water and skip the next few feeds.

Feed your plants

10 minutesEvery 2 to 4 weeksEasy

Steps

  1. 1Feed from spring to late summer, when plants are growing. Skip late fall and winter.
  2. 2Water the plant first if the soil is dry. Food on dry roots can burn them.
  3. 3Mix the plant food with water exactly as the label says, then pour it evenly onto the soil until a little runs out of the bottom.
  4. 4Repeat every 2 to 4 weeks, or as the label says. A white crust on the soil means too much, so flush the pot with plain water.
  • The three numbers

N-P-K is nitrogen for leaves, phosphorus for roots and flowers, and potassium for overall health. Balanced suits most houseplants.

  • Liquid or slow-release

Liquid gives you control over every feed. Slow-release is easier and lasts longer.

  • Made for the plant

Orchids, succulents and citrus have their own foods. A general one suits most leafy plants.
