Steps

  1. 1Brush and floss first. Mouthwash is an extra step, not a replacement.
  2. 2Pour the amount on the label into the cap or a small cup.
  3. 3Swish it around your mouth and between your teeth for as long as the label says, then spit it out. Don't swallow it.
  4. 4Some rinses work best if you don't eat, drink or rinse with water for a while afterward. The label will say.
  • Cosmetic or therapeutic

Cosmetic rinses freshen breath. Therapeutic ones have active ingredients, like fluoride, listed on the label.

  • Alcohol or alcohol-free

Rinses with alcohol can sting and dry the mouth. Alcohol-free ones are gentler.

  • The ADA Seal

The American Dental Association's Seal of Acceptance means the maker showed the rinse is safe and does what it says.
